rogue behaviour what is your action plan?

In 2012 this lonely object was discovered in space. They gave it a name and decided it was “rogue.” Why? Most planets orbit a host star. Not so rogue planets. They orbit the entire galaxy. On the website Siencealert is the following comment: “Based on these findings, we're left with two hypotheses: CFBDSIR 2149-0403 is either a young (less than 500 million years old) rogue planet, between two and 13 times the mass of Jupiter; or it's an older (2 to 3 billion years old) highly metallic brown dwarf, with a mass ranging from two to 40 times the mass of Jupiter. Or maybe it's something else entirely.”

I have observed rogue characteristics in various members of clubs and the workplace. There are those who are self-motivated, and they do more than is required. These are often people who show up and do the “dirty” or labor-intensive work. Or they serve as members of the executive because they live the promise of Toastmasters and Toastmasters Values. They understand the expression of “give and take.” They know that by giving they are also receiving.

Then there are those whose actions are non-committal. They will do the right thing when asked. And ask you MUST. I don’t understand how members can look at the work and not become involved. Maybe you can shed light for me on this tendency.

The last group is those with rogue characteristics. Just like CFBDSIR 2149-0403, they go their own way. Their mantra is “doing it my way.” They won’t do what is expected. They won’t reply to emails, they simply ignore what is requested. They do the minimum and have no problem with others taking on more responsibilities. I have seen how other members empower them by doing that person’s work. I know of a member who will sit on the Executive and do the other members' jobs, year in and year out.

I know of inactive members who don’t show up at meetings and then complain that they are neglected. “Hallo…?” On the mindtools website the following characteristics are seen as rogue behavior:” poor work ethic, negative attitude, insubordinate, lazy, destructive, unmotivated, wasteful, egotistical.” Why do we allow these members in our clubs and businesses? There is an expression that I think is applicable: “One rotten potato spoils the whole bag.”

I am of the opinion that 10 people with drive and people skills can do more than 20 people who are non-committal. Having members who display rogue behaviors is bad for the morale of the other members or employees.

Please tell me again… why do we keep people with rogue behavior at work, in our clubs and even in our lives? If we do this, are we not part of the problem? What then are we?

  1. You are soooo right! However, as Toastmasters, we as leaders, before we kick their arses to the curb, should make sure that we spend the time and effort to find what motivates them. I know that in my case, the leadership style of my club completely de-motivated me. I was publicly dressed down for something I didn't do and forced to apologize to someone I didn't do it too! If something like that is in the past of a member it may take time to get by it.

    1. Tooshie, your story is not unique. I don't understand why any management is not asking first of all, how did we contribute to the mistake or what could we have done different. Problem is that fact finding is not done in a proper way. Emotions take over. Humankind still need to evolve a bit BEFORE we can even try to colonize another planet.
